Meeting during the week 4 marquee matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers, the KC Guyz small group honored the tradition of sacrificial works. However, the small group met to discuss their foundational principle of being “justified by faith, not by works” (Gal 2:16). The irony was not lost on the group.
Adding to the moment, Spencer Mobley, host and small group member, took a theological leap of his own. Refusing to play the 4th quarter live game after the conclusion of group, Mobley quipped, “[We must suffer for our faith, as James said, ‘We are saved by works, not by faith.]’”
Editor’s note: We found no evidence of Mobley having read the book of James.
Participants of the Galatians Study:
- Bosch (Won)
- Lamb (Lost)
- Zisman (Lost)
Divine intervention didn’t favor the work horses. Those present at small group posted a combined 1-2 losing record for the week. This office can only conclude that our Lord, who not only invented football but also favored Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes, would prefer we watch the Chiefs. Moreover, we prayed for guidance, asking if the Lord would speak up if He wished us to meet during future Chiefs games—and His silence spoke volumes.
Silent Observers (physically present, spiritually on ESPN):
- O’Neil (Won)
- Norton (Lost)
- Wahrman (Lost)
In keeping with the day’s theme, the silent observers fared no better, also going 1-2. Their perseverance to white knuckle small group couldn’t translate to victory.
We saw Spencer Mobley win his matchup, perhaps due to the shear will of sacrifice to host during the game.
Non-Attendees:
- Kennedy (Won)
- Cotton (Won)
- Arends (Won, second most points)
- Green (Lost, third most points)
- Gilmore (Lost)
Overall Record:
- Works-Based Faction (attended group): 3-4
- Faith-Based Faction (skipped group): 3-2
When filtering out for matchups where both teams attended or skipped group, we’re left with only one game: Cotton vs Lamb. Lamb, leader of this weekly study and only attendee of the four Galatians weekly leaders, failed to eclipse the century mark in his loss to Cotton.
The plan to prioritize points over piety proved powerful with an average of 134 points per team. Those who attended group averaged just 129 points per team.
It’s clear from the numbers: just like in spirituality, faith alone led to better results. The Week 4 data leaves us with the question: Is attending small group during a Chiefs game an act of faith, or a sacrificial work? Either way, the solo fide Faith-Based Faction seems to have had the final say this week.
