Preseason Newsletter
Only 6 days remain until draft day, and in this article, we provide everything you need to know. From stellar selections to disastrous draftees, let’s dive into the best and worst moments in draft history to see how they’ve marked our competitive landscape.
Best Draft Picks of All Time
The draft is where stars are made, and no one has shone brighter than Ryan Zisman when he selected Cooper Kupp with his 4th round pick in the 2021 season. Kupp set the gold standard for drafts in our league as he outscored all players with 439 points and scored 65 more points than the next best non-QB position.
Other notable mentions include:
- Norton: Patrick Mahomes (3rd round, 2022, QB1)
- Norton: Mark Andrews (4th round, 2021, TE1)
- Green: Deebo Samuel (6th round, 2021, WR3)
- Arends: Josh Jacobs (6th round, 2022, RB3)
Worst Draft Picks of All Time
Of course, not every draft pick is a touchdown. Some picks have left managers ruing the day of their decision. Topping the list of regrettable choices is Norton’s 2023 selection of Nick Chubb at 1.7, which resulted in a painful season total of 23 points.
Other notable mentions include:
- Arends: J.K. Dobbins (5th round, 2023, 12 total points)
- Mobley: Trey Lance (8th round, 2022, 13 total points)
- Mobley: Aaron Rodgers (10th round, 2023, 0 total points)
- Wahrman: Elijah Mitchel (6th round, 2022, 43 total points)
Positional Draft Leaders
Within our league, some have proven themselves experts in drafting specific positions. Our office created a method to measure draft abilities we call draft value—the number we assign to draft picks based on the performance of that player and weighted against their draft position—to measure each owner’s abilities. Here are our findings for the draft leader at each position:
QB: Connor Lamb lands this spot having drafted Josh Allen (QB1) in the 8th round of 2020 and grabbing Herbert (QB2) in the 5th round of 2021.
RB: Trey Kennedy has proven the best in this position with picks like Fournette (RB6) in the 7th round and Mixon (RB4) in the 2nd round of 2021, and Aaron Jones (RB5) in the second round of 2020.
WR: Norton enters the fold for his receiver selections with picks like Ja’Marr Chase (WR5) in the 6th round of 2021, Keenan Allen (WR8) in the third round of 2023, and Lockett (WR13) in the 7th of 2022.
TE: It’s no surprise to see Ryan Zisman leading this position after drafting Kelce (TE1) in 2022, Waller in the 5th round of 2020 (TE2), and Hockenson (TE4) in the 3rd round of 2023.
K: Lamb sees his name twice on our board. He fought hard this off-season to remove kickers, little did he know his positional advantage keeping these players in fantasy lineups.
DST: A strong advocate of Defenses and Patriotism, it makes sense to see Norton lead this category by virtue of the Dallas Cowboys who he drafted in the 9th round in 2023 (DST1) and 13th round in 2022 (DST2).
All-Time Draft King Rankings
Andrew Norton reigns on top with an all-time average draft pick value of 5.01, followed by Ryan Zisman who boasts a value of 1.81. These two have set the bar high, proving that a well-executed draft is the foundation of a successful dynasty.
On the flip side, Chris Wahrman’s draft struggles are well-documented, with a league-low average draft value of -0.55.
